It's impressive seeing what 8~ years of CPU progress does even on the low end of CPU SKUs

I've finished (for now) upgrades of the bgp.tools IXP remote infra and the last box went from a Atom C2550 to Celeron J6412, same core count, 4W less of TDP and the CPU time on the same workload has dropped in half!

A rrdtool graph for CPU time, there is a blip in the middle where the load looks like it has been reduced in half, due to a machine swap

@benjojo yes! And that lots of the low end parts are powerfull enough for lots of workloads!

@nicoduck @erikk it sucks so bad there is not a good+modern version of the HP Gen 8 Microserver, I am keeping my Gen8 (vs your Gen7) alive, but I really really want something not DDR3, it's the only DDR3 thing left in my entire computer estate

@wrmsr @benjojo @erikk that would require a *lot* more storage there. If im building a new nas, I'm thinking about 2x16-20TB disks (currently 12TB usuable and thats quite full)

@benjojo @russss @erikk mh I actually don't need much compute. so in therory some ARM based stuff would be enough, but the availability isn't great with some recent chipsets...

The Atom team has consistently been the strongest part of Intel for a good while now, they've done seriouly impressive stuff.
On Lunar Lake, the performance gap between Skymont and Lion Cove is shockingly small... And then you look at the large power draw gap.

@MissAemilia Intel being burned over many generations of mistakes on making mobile CPUs finally settled on a part of the mobile market that is seemingly viable with Atom/etc
