one honk maybe more

I've had a Fujifilm X-E3 since 2017, and it has a neat app that (among many other things) hails your phone over bluetooth to ask for it's GPS, and geotags the pictures.

Except I've never managed to get this to work. Finally sat down with the goal to get it to work, figured it was a firmware upgrade issue, and found that the android app also supports remote firmware upgrade (very handy!). Except that the app didn't say there was a update available.

Hmph.

It turned out. The ability to remote upgrade was added in 1.01 of the camera firmware. Mine was 1.00! The app for some reason has no way to detect/notify this???

One (large! 130MB!) download later, I now have geotagging and a renewed mistrust of any feature that isnt the 1st party purpose of a device.

Anyway, here, have a cat. (taken on said camera)

While on the discussion of geotagging, one of the most annoying things dealing with GPS cords in "creative" programming is that it's a pain to turn them into cities/countries (aka geocoding) without either slow APIs or expensive APIs.

I found https://github.com/sams96/rgeo (and the submitted a PR) that solves the problem locally! Mega handy. Takes a few 100's of ms to init but provides very fast local geocoding. bgp.tools uses it for the RIPE Atlas probe location (on the looking glass drop down), since RIPE does not perform geocoding for you.

But I've always wanted to have a local photo browser mirror, since my normal OneDrive solution is a little slow and tedious (I think my 300GB~ photo gallery is too large for it these days), so something like this would be great for locally sorting all photos by country/city.

Another neat idea I already do is link the google location data (that I have opted into, despite google asking me every 30 days if I really meant that), that was all of my SLR~ photos can have their rough geotagging re-added!
