Forget looking at the weather forecasts, you can simply tell if it's really windy in the UK by looking at the power grid and the price of energy. It is currently very windy in Scotland

@benjojo Tiny bit disappointed that we have still got 5GW of gas spinning, given NGESO's recent comments about expecting to run without any gas some time this year.

@steve Yeah come winter maybe, but getting to "CGT generation zero" will be super tricky! I suspect there is going to be a weird day where it's very winy, sunny, and also low demand that allows them to run a hour or two without CGTs, but the road to doing that for longer periods is really in the distance still :/

@benjojo I saw a few predictions that it could have happened early this morning before demand picked up, but I guess the wind didn't reach us in time.

@wolf480pl In practice consumers do, if not rarely, but commercial users will still get some additional fees around transmission etc on their consumption in this period, the UK often has too much wind power available at any time, so I would bet (but don't have the numbers handy) that there is a lot more wind power around to use, but can't be used because of a lack of transmission capacity

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk @wolf480pl@mstdn.io don't consumers also pay fees on transmission? Here there are often dips into negatives (we recently had a whole day with negative average price), but because of transmission costs it never gets into real world negatives.

@benjojo@benjojo.co.uk @wolf480pl@mstdn.io huh, here it's just another line item on the invoice
0,10043 EUR/kWh for distribution and 0,00108053 EUR/kWh for transmission (with these rates regulated by government)

@wolf480pl @benjojo I'm on Octopus Agile so I do sometimes when they know the wholesale price is going negative. It's quite fun trying to turn everything on.

@benjojo I get that it's capital intensive, but it must be reaching a point where arbitraging wind and solar with battery storage must be like shooting fish in a barrel.

@bitcoaxer there is defo a market doing that in the UK for solar, but for wind? I don't think that exists (in a meaningful way/integrated way), the scale of generation for wind is very different as far as I understand
