I wonder how many kW's worth of Cisco 6500 are still left, recently read a about a carrier just this year clearing out a 3 digit number of kW's worth of them, so surely there is still a good few MW still of these devices likely lost in the inventory after 10's of years of operation but still running doing nothing or almost nothing.

@benjojo the way to get rid of these and other unused gear would be a system where individual techs could claim bounties for turning them off. Something like the first year’s electricity savings.

@karppinen Yeah, and given current power prices (and especially in the country for which I read that story from) that would have been a pretty serious bonus

@benjojo oh dear, I worked on 6500s at c&W. We had a few dozen across a bunch of projects. We once had a data center break in where a bunch of CPU boards were stolen, seemingly to order.

@benjojo yep, we got hit with that too. E450 especially. The people breaking in knew what they were doing. Everything was usually powered off an stripped down properly (if you ignore the time they used garden sheers to cut through the cable of a bunch of switches.
Weird times.

@benjojo seeing pictures of (US) Telco infrastructure with a lot of old equipment Retired In Place (RIP) space usage is not the incentive everywhere like in dense cities. A 6500 is a lot of rack space and power usage that can be recovered!

@KHoos yeah I think a lot of this stuff just gets lost in places like exchanges where there's plenty of space, and only really get noticed/removed when power concerns arise

@benjojo hadn’t the DFZ grown to the point that even the latest supervisors can’t hold a full table anymore? Seems like it would limit their use to not internet edge like they used to be.

@drscriptt yeah but realistically that actually happened a long time ago, unless you were very creatively slicing the tcam. I think most of these units are just hanging around, not actually doing anything but still powered on.
