I'm forever disappointed that windows phone did not survive, It had one of the better UX/UI stories that only now my Pixel 7 is equivalent to, while also just being decent hardware.

Though it still was windows through and through, demonstrated by the one time the phone crashed/rebooted/whatever during some activity and I got greeted with a classic "bootmgr" screen asking me to insert the windows installation disk into my phone...

A Nokia Lumia 920 displaying a black bootmgr screen asking saying that "Windows failed to start, a recent hardware or software change might have been the cause" -> "insert your windows installation disk and restart your computer" "Info: A required device isnt connected or cant be accessed"

@benjojo I loved development for Windows Phone too. I worked at a place prior that had to make apps... Windows was the easiest and best experience, following by iPhone, and Android was a nightmare. These were proper apps rather than web views, and the Windows experience was truly incredible as their dev tooling was incredible (but yeah, you had to run Windows, but that's the same deal with Apple too)

@theartlav @benjojo oh I didn't mean to suggest that... iOS development is a nightmare, but compared to Android development it's a bit dreamy and lovely.

it's all relative.

Windows Phone on the other hand, an actual dev ecosystem that was almost a joy to use.

time for me to build an app on all 3 platforms, the same app, back in 2014:

  • Windows = 1 week, with time to spare (which I wasted)
  • iOS = 4 weeks
  • Android = 6 weeks

and of all three apps, the Windows one worked best, felt most right for the phone, and was most capable (because it was all so easy I added a little more, and because the framework gave so much for free)
