Today I bought a switch for 1.2k USD, then just bought 500 USD worth of lasers for the switch. I can totally see how the switch/router is quickly seen as cheap as compared to what you install in it.

@FritzAdalis I've seen these pop up in different channels, they hit the max MSA power draw, and they are designed for "shared access" cabling, in reality your cable ISP might not be very happy with you deploying this My side is the rack for bgp.tools, so these these funky modem optics make very little sense

@benjojo I think 100G LR pricing has started drifting upwards from a nice low, I actually advised a colleague that they might want to install a 100G/QSFP28 card in a server rather than 2x25G SFP+, not much of a price difference really.

@sully Yeah thankfully(?) I am not in the 100G-LR game, I am just buying 100G-SR's that are really quite cheap! But yeah if the 100G NIC is cheap and you might actually hit the 25G limit, yeah fuck it, why not go 100G at this point

@jeroen @IPngNetworks it's just a 2nd SN2010 for bgptools so if the current one fails I'm not doomed

@benjojo I can tell it's not Cisco kit, because there's no line items for 4k USD of licenses/maintenance 😀
