Plugged in the new replacement USB LTE modem and uh:

kernel: usb 1-1.2: new high-speed USB device number 93 using dwc2
kernel: usb 1-1.2: New USB device found, idVendor=05c6, idProduct=9091, bcdDevice=ff.ff
kernel: usb 1-1.2: New USB device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=3
kernel: usb 1-1.2: Product: Android
kernel: usb 1-1.2: Manufacturer: Android
kernel: usb 1-1.2: SerialNumber: 0

Of course! Of course the USB stick is a headless cell phone, why the fuck not!

Overall, cool device. Seemingly made out a recycled cell phone (The SoC is a MSM8916).

Firmware is pretty trash, but there is a surprisingly active scene out there for modding firmware on these.

$ adb shell # Works well!
shell@UFI:/proc $ cat version
Linux version 3.10.28 (richal@server) (gcc version 4.7 (GCC) ) #1 SMP PREEMPT Sat Feb 11 10:21:05 CST 2023

Remarkably modern kernel build date too. This thing goes under loads of different names: like UF896 , UFI001W , etc

It seems because of it's origins as a source for recycled parts, there are endless variations on the part. So buying one for modding is a bit of a nightmare.

hackaday did a post on one of the variations: https://hackaday.com/2022/08/03/hackable-20-modem-combines-lte-and-pi-zero-w2-power/ but I assume since this post is now more than 6 months old, this exact part is no longer sold. I bought mine from a UK eBay seller.

My version appears to be a JZ02_V10 and it does not seem to have anything written about it yet. I kinda don't want to take off the can though, since I still want a functioning LTE modem at the end of it!
