@benjojo the Musée des Artes et Métiers is really neat and worth a run through, especially the second floor. (There’s so, so much old machinery up there, it’s awesome) The metro stop for it is also worth a look, it’s got serious Jules Verne vibes.

@benjojo also, while I’m thinking about it, check out the back catalogue of posts from @monparisalphabetique who is posting pics of Paris streets in alphabetical order. There are lots of lovely bits of architecture in there and it may give you an idea of places to walk by.

Best bang for the buck in terms of panoramic view is likely the dome of the Basilica of the Sacred Heart of Montmartre at 8€. In comparison, the Eiffel Tower feels like an utter ripoff.

Centre Pompidou would have been nice too (and even free if you only want to walk through the escalator tubes at the building's facade), but sadly that one is closed for renovations :/

You were asking for Telco stuff. How about the Caselli Pantelegraph, a working fax machine from 1865, that was in commercial service? They have one on display at the Musée des Arts et Métiers, along with the Chappe optical telegraph that helped the revolutionnary Republic defeat the entire might of all European kingdoms bent on overthrowing it and restoring monarchy.

Science wise, museums like the Palais de la Découverte and the Cité des Sciences are more geared for kids (and frankly the San Francisco Exploratorium is far better). Marie Curie's old lab has been turned into a museum, however, and the École des Mines has the world's largest mineralographic collection. Finally, there is the Henri Poincaré Maths museum:

I don't know when you are planning on visiting, bu if it is on the weekend of Sep. 19–20, that is French Heritage Days and the BIPM metrology org in the Pavillon de Breteuil, in Saint-Cloud just outside Paris, is open to visitors. That's where the old physical platinum-iridium international prototype kilogram and the older standard meter were kept, and it's still formally where the SI is managed.
