I get the impression that the LTE/NR roaming story is worse (and getting wrose) than it's former 2G/UMTS counterparts. This SMS from my carrier when I got back to the UK does not help this impression

A text message that says "Whilst away, did you have any problems with your roaming experience? Please answer Yes or No"

maybe it's just the hazard of knowing about things, but reading more about VoLTE from stuff like https://nickvsnetworking.com/background-to-the-volte-mess/ just gives the impression of "oh god why"

(The whole nickvsnetworking blog is excellent by the way, I lost huge amounts of time reading the whole archive of posts, loads of mobile carrier information hazards)

@benjojo it always blows folks’ minds (and mine, frankly) that they flat out didn’t have a way to make calls on it when they rolled it out. CSFB is such an unholy mess in itself that I’m amazed it ever even worked badly

@ninkosan when I worked maybe 20% of my working hours in DCs (at a bank) I had to communicate that under no circumstances should they call me over PSTN no matter how dire the situation is, because my phone at the time couldn't do VoLTE, and it would trigger circuit switched fallback and black hole my phone in the data hall for 10 mins or so. It was always better to WhatsApp call me or something similar
