Why when I launch the front facing camera on my phone does my face slowly distort for the first few seconds? what cursed things are going on in this device?

@benjojo looks a bit like it's a countermeasure for the high amount of perspective distortion you get from taking selfies up close. I guess it takes a bit of time for it to recognise a face and apply the distortion compensation, though I'm not sure the smooth transition is part of the algorithm (maybe something iterative?) or if that is just to avoid a jumpy change

What happens if your face is not in the frame from te start? Does it wait for you to show up?

I think its trying to compensate for the distortion of the wide angle lens. To do it right it'd need to know the distance between objects in the image and the camera. Maybe its doing some facial detection or using lidar + an exponential average filter to guess the distances and do the correction
