Why when I launch the front facing camera on my phone does my face slowly distort for the first few seconds? what cursed things are going on in this device?CW: Ben stares directly at you jump-scare

@benjojo It's some kind of face enhancement thing; mine does it too. I noticed it first years ago with Snapchat, then some Android system update made all the camera apps do it.

@benjojo maybe it's setting (or not) the wide-angle lens, so you see the image warping?CW: Ben stares directly at you jump-scare

@benjojo looks a bit like it's a countermeasure for the high amount of perspective distortion you get from taking selfies up close. I guess it takes a bit of time for it to recognise a face and apply the distortion compensation, though I'm not sure the smooth transition is part of the algorithm (maybe something iterative?) or if that is just to avoid a jumpy change

Wild guess
@benjojo I think its trying to compensate for the distortion of the wide angle lens. To do it right it'd need to know the distance between objects in the image and the camera. Maybe its doing some facial detection or using lidar + an exponential average filter to guess the distances and do the correctionWild guess
What happens if your face is not in the frame from te start? Does it wait for you to show up?

@benjojo it's gotta be some kind of perspective correction shit right? like dealing with the pronounced foreshortening of the features of near obobjectsre: CW: Ben stares directly at you jump-scare

@benjojo Kinda reminds me of the effect when I'm zooming in/out using my phone's back-facing camera, and it tries to transition between lenses seamlessly. Lot of dark magic going on with phone cameras these days
