I wonder what the history of the Cisco CLI's default of "Any unknown command is now a (slow) DNS lookup because maybe you want to telnet ?" is. It seems to be on almost every single IOS image I've ever touched, so it's got to have been implemented very early The amount of devices that must have It's 100% one of the more mundane uses for a time machine
no ip domain-lookup
at the top of the config must be staggering. Why does it remain this way.

@benjojo I have very misty memories of using the ip host command to map names to async ports when using 2500s as terminal servers. I suspect that's where this stems from.

@benjojo Perhaps these are the same people who added the
command-not-found
package to Ubuntu's default set. (Not exactly the same I suppose, but usually the first thing I torch on any new installation I encounter.)

I could have sworn that the cisco terminal servers I dialed into in the '80s required 'open' to telnet, but as far back as I can find (ios 6.1, May 1987) you just typed the hostname or ip address at the prompt.
