That subtle pitch difference when a 44.1 kHz media you are familiar with is playing at 48 kHz incorrectly, that you can't un-hear The CD people have to answer for their audio sample rate crimes

@benjojo They did this to an early DVD release of one of my favorite childhood movies (The Last Unicorn), due to a failure to adjust for PAL to NTSC. It threw off both the music and the comedic timing. Drove me insane. 😅

@benjojo you can blame Sony's executives for that... One of them thought their wife's demand it fit Beethoven's ninth is a valid engineering concern for their company... https://www.turing-machines.com/pdf/beethoven.htm

BETAMAX DID THIS TO US?! A failed format so potent it infected other formats
Then at the time, there existed a product in the late 1970s called the Sony F1 that was designed to record digital audio onto readily-available video tape (Betamax, not VHS). That was at 44.1 kHz (or more precisely 44.056 kHz). So this would make it easy to transfer recordings, without resampling and interpolation, from the F1 to CD or in the other direction.

@benjojo I don't think it was Betamax; the first PCM adapters predate it and were actually 44.1kHz exactly
.056 is an NTSC induced aberration (44.1 * 29.97/30) because they slowed their frame rate fractionally for colour

@benjojo When I was a kid, our family home was a recording studio and all our stereo masters were transferred to betamax video tapes, which meant we naturally used a cast-off betamax machine with the TV in the lounge and I could never borrow or lend a tape to any mates because the entire rest of my known universe had VHS ðŸ˜. Truly, a format of crimes.

@benjojo I mean… the format was further developed into a professional format that was further developed into the most popular broadcast video recording tape format of all time… Betamax was a failed format but it’s descendant was most certainly not 🤣
