@yadt the memories at school and "ejecting" the NIC on the thin-client desktops. I assume at some point those VMs were rebooted... I assume....

I seem to remember that on old versions of Xen+Windows it would give you the option to "eject" the Intel 8253 PIT timer. Really not quite sure how that would work in practice, because I assume at that point reality just falls apart, you know because; you just ejected time itself

@benjojo do modern OSes even need PIT after they've booted up and detected that they have HPET and TSC?

@wolf480pl I think even on modern OS'es if the PIT stopped ticking the system would not last very long, at the very least I would assume some SMM tasks etc would stop working

@wolf480pl hmm, that is a good point. I guess it's easy to try with some reasonably simple patches to qemu (aka, stop the PIT interrupts after ~60 seconds of runtime) and see what happens to linux/windows
