@benjojo I’m pretty sure the water up here in Hertfordshire is somehow even harder than that in London. The kettle scales up much quicker now than it ever did in London even with filtered water. I now change the filter as soon as it starts flashing instead of waiting a few more weeks and that helps a lot… as well as having 5L of white vinegar 😆

@jamesog I found that a cheap box of food grade citric acid is a lot nicer to do this with, boiling vinegar always gave off a pretty extreme stench etc

Completely devastated after letting the kettle descale overnight (resulting in a flawless stainless steel liner in the morning), that by this evening there are already tiny spots of limescale >:(

@eta Like i'm fine until I start drinking little knives, I think I should generally avoid eating/drinking tiny sharp fragments of rock

@lmierzwa I'm too used to the favour profile of earl grey + "well 'ard" water When I was in NYC for a few months it blew my mind that the earl grey tasted totally wrong, had someone bring out some earl grey bags as they were passing through, was even more devastating to find that the "british" bags tasted exactly the same

@benjojo huh, overnight? I just boil some citric acid and swish it around a bit, completely descaled in minutes

@lx @janamarie Effort I guess (obviously so is descaling the kettle), but also I've grown used to the flavor profile of London water...

@benjojo it's been so long since I descaled the kettle that I'm not convinced that the limescale isn't the bit I like.

@benjojo we use a brita filter which helps significantly. Used to have a separate jug but ended up buying a kettle with the filter built in.
