The upcoming death of Skype is super inconvenient, I am (or soon to be "was") a regular user of "Skype Out" because it was the most simple way of doing international POTS calls, using my own number (aka, caller id "spoofed"), with WebRTC (so I don't have to mess around with god-awful software, or even worse a real phone) I don't know of a service (outside of google voice, that I cannot use, because I am in the UK) that can do what Skype Out does/did. A genuine loss/pain in the ass

@benjojo As far as I understand MS Teams is their "replacement", but does it support Skype Out kind of features or is it Teams-users-only?

@lx Teams does not appear to have a dial out product that works like Skype, apart from the people who had yearly billing agreements with Skype (I didnt) and that ends in 2026

@benjojo do you have a landline / ISP suscription with phone option ? I've seen some people plug analog to SIP gateways in there and it works okay (but it's a major pain to configure)
don't have other solutions to suggest but I'd be interested if you find something decent :/

@kouett I'm specifically trying to avoid touching SIP/IP Phones. I've never had a good experience with soft phones, and a IP phone for 1 hour sucks compared to my headphones and mic (hence why Skype Out rocks, because it's WebRTC)

It seems like sipgate.co.uk has a WebRTC phone product, except: A) Sipgate.co.uk is £13/m I spent maybe £2/m on Skype out before this The fact that (B) happened, means that sipgate and it's sipgate.io "sister" service instantly feels like one of those products that will extort me. So "nope" Argh, phones. I do not want to become phone people just to solve the 4 international calls that I do a month without getting roasted by my phone carrier (and also get a interface where it's comfortable to sit on a call for a hour)
B) The website has a dark pattern where it makes it non obvious that there is a min of 2 users, so it's really £26/m

@ch2500 I regularly call the US, My mobile carrier charges £4.21 a min, I often find myself sitting on hold for ~30 mins. That would cost me £126.3 to do, not okay

@benjojo Sounds like you need to give @revk enough beer to add a WebRTC front end to https://www.aa.net.uk/voice-and-mobile/

@penguin42 @revk I mean, yeah, if A&A offered a WebRTC wrapper around their SIP service (I really don't want to go into the land of SIP/Phones/SoftPhones/getting screwed when I leak my SIP creds) then I would buy it in a instant, bonus if I can also do that Skype feature where it has the caller ID of my mobile like skype does for me It's insane that all phone stuff is just really meh, and skype was the only one that had a non awful service (in both UX and Price) for this

What is kind of silly is that I already pay some small amount of Twilio numbers (for bgp.tools's signal/telegram number etc), but twilio doesnt seem to have a simple "Web RTC Dial Pad" page, even if just for ""debugging"". Such a missed opportunity

@benjojo its not gonna be a direct replacement but voip.ms has access points all over and can get you caller id outbound control, and costs very little, mostly depending on your usage

@benjojo the (cheap) sip market just seems to be nonexistent in the UK. I searched for a provider last year to get a number to try stuff (debug international calls from/to our system) and there seemed to be zero options which did have no monthly fee.
