A friend (@vista_df] told a story of when someone stole a huge amount of copper in Hungary, and man, these photos are brutal. In the end 150kg of copper cable was stolen, at current-ish rates that is just 200USD, but it cost the provider on the other side 250k+ USD to repair the section of cable. @benjojo People over here (Poland) seem to be doing this to train tracks and/or power lines sometimes, leading to huge delays and disruptions in transit schedules.

@benjojo always interesting to see how things get fixed afterwards. Once upon a time we had a lot of customer fiber connections into a datacenter that had to be moved to another building, next to a busy cycling path because NL. These were hundreds of fibers that took days and days to connect. One of the fears was that people would assume these were copper cables and try to steal them. It was a great day when the hole could be closed.
